Grape Vine Virus Testing
Exciting New Chapter for Ormond Nurseries...
We are pleased to announce that we have recently acquired Vineyard Plants nursery from Villa Maria. This purchase also includes Vine Test Lab, a lab dedicated to the testing of grapevines for grapevine leaf roll virus. The sale is effective from 31 August 2020.
Vineyard Plants Ltd. was established by Villa Maria in 1999 to meet the needs of its company vineyard and grower vineyard developments. With this acquisition, we will take over the ownership of all Vineyard Plants’ library material – including three recently imported Albarino clones and the Chardonnay Montie clone, as well as a large selection of Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc mother vine material. We have worked alongside Vineyard Plants in the past, importing the Chard FPS, R80 and Pinot Noir R97 from UC Davis 5 years ago. This acquisition will create more opportunity and more variety with the clonal selections we can offer our growers.
Vine Test Lab Ltd. was established in 2006 in Hawke’s Bay and provides a testing service for GLRaV-1 and GLRaV-3 to nurseries and vineyards throughout New Zealand. Vine Test Lab is one of only two laboratories in New Zealand focussed on testing grapevines for these viruses. It will continue to operate in Hawke’s Bay for the 2020 testing season and will be moved to Blenheim in time for the 2021 season. We feel that having our own testing service will help us provide our customers with more assistance with decisions around replanting Marlborough’s aging vineyards.
Vineyard Plants and Ormond Nurseries have worked together for many years, and we share many core values. As quoted by Marcus Wickham (General Manager)
“There are a lot of synergies between the two companies. Not only are both companies’ family owned with loyal industry relationships, but they have been proven to be innovative and committed to the future of the industry with both being sponsors of the Young Viticulturist of the Year Competition.”
Marcus was the first winner of the Young Viticulturist of the Year in 2006, the year of inception for the competition. Emma Taylor, General Manager of Vineyard Plants, went on to take the title the following year in 2007. Emma will be working with our team over the coming months to ensure that the transition period is smooth. She will also collaborate with our team as we carry on with our sponsorship and involvement with Young Vit 2020. We feel that this collaboration is the perfect testament to the depth of the competition which continues to go from strength to strength.
Vineyard Plants will cease operating at the end of August 2020 once it has lifted and graded its vines for the current year. Alongside new clonal material, Ormond Nurseries will also be purchasing access to more drought tolerant rootstocks. We look forward to expanding our connections into Hawke’s Bay and the North Island, as well as our services to our local community and customers further south.
Please do not hesitate to contact us with any queries regarding your 2020 planting requirements and beyond, as well as any information about the new varieties, clones and rootstocks that we will now be offering.
